Palmerston North experiences its best weather during the summer months of December through to February, with pleasantly warm days and little rainfall. This also coincides with the long New Zealand summer holidays when many domestic tourists are travelling, meaning a slight increase in demand for hotel rooms and flight tickets.
The week surrounding Easter sees another small peak in visitor numbers into Palmerston North, although temperatures are much chillier and drizzly rains can be expected.
The winter months of June through to August are generally considered the off season in Palmerston North, with cold temperatures and the majority of the annual rain falling in June. The mountains that flank the city create notably windy conditions, particularly during the spring months of September through to November, so while temperatures are beginning to rise, the prevailing weather conditions can be less than favourable.
If you are visiting Palmerston North for its cultural activities and galleries, then the off season weather conditions shouldn’t put too much of a dampener on your holiday, and you will benefit from reduced accommodation and flight deals.
You will get the best deals on flights to Palmerston North if you book as early as possible, particularly if you plan on travelling during the long annual summer holidays. Due to the lack of competition on most routes, flight ticket prices can be expensive throughout the year and booking early is the only way to secure the best deals. The Palmerston North Airport is located in the suburb of Milson on the city’s outskirts, around 5 kilometres from the central business district. There are regular public bus services between Palmerston North and Feilding which drop and pick-up passengers directly from the airport terminal, offering the most cost-effective means of travelling to and from the airport.
The fastest route from the airport is with one of the metered taxis which are available from the ranks outside the terminal building. They will drop you directly at your accommodation door and, considering the short distance from the airport to the centre of Palmerston North, are not a particularly expensive option.
