Flights from Wellington and Christchurch take a bit longer, with the fastest flights lasting just over 35h. Most of these flights have three or more layovers, although you can find a few two-stop routes to New Delhi. Most flights from Wellington and Christchurch stop at Auckland on their way out of the country, although a few flights fly through Sydney as their first stop.
Unfortunately, nonstop flights from New Zealand to New Delhi are not currently available. However, many New Delhi flight deals from Auckland feature only one or two stops. Qatar and All Nippon Airways (ANA) both offer one-stop flights, flying through Doha and Tokyo, respectively. Popular routes with two stops are offered by Emirates (stopping at Kuala Lumpur and Dubai) and United (stopping at Los Angeles and San Francisco). Although most flights from Christchurch and Wellington stop at least three times on their journey, a few flights do have two stops. For example, the Air New Zealand / Qatar Airways route departs from Christchurch and stops at Sydney and Doha, while an Air New Zealand / ANA route from Wellington flies through Sydney and Tokyo before landing in New Delhi.
One of the easiest ways to travel from the New Delhi airport is via the Delhi Metro’s Orange Line train, which departs every 10-15min, arriving at the New Delhi stop in about 20min. If you prefer to take a taxi, you should budget at least 30min for the trip and more if there’s traffic. A taxi ride to the city centre generally costs about ₹ 400-500 (NZ$ 7.85-9.80). Ridesharing services are another transportation option; Uber and Ola are two of the companies that service the airport.
India’s centuries-old capital city is a hub of commerce and culture. One of the oldest buildings in the city is the Qutub Minar, featuring one of the world’s tallest brick minarets. Near the Qutub Minor you’ll find the Ashokan pillar (a 1,600-year-old iron column) as well as India’s first mosque, the Quwwat-ul-Islam. The 21st-century Akshardham Temple has beautiful gardens and exhibition halls and is in the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the world’s largest Hindu temples. The modern Lotus Temple is beautifully inspired by the lotus flower. The Raj Ghat, or Gandhi Memorial, stimulates contemplation and is a place to pay your respects to the leader of the Indian Freedom Movement. For a change of pace, you can indulge in some shopping at one of the city’s many markets, such as the Dilli Haat or Janpath. When it’s time for a meal, you may want to grab some chole bhature or aloo chaat from a street vendor or enjoy a plate dal Bukhara and other traditional dishes in one of the city’s fine restaurants.
