Flights from New Zealand to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, take approximately 55-59h to complete the trip. Currently, only one major airport, Christchurch Airport (CHC), offers departures to Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), Ho Chi Minh City, but you can get regular service on this route.
Unfortunately, direct flights from New Zealand to Ho Chi Minh City are not currently available. Ho Chi Minh City flight deals from Christchurch require a minimum of two connections, and these usually involve lengthy layover times. Most flights make a stop first at Auckland Airport (AKL), where you’ll spend a period of roughly 21h 30min, before journeying to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) for another 18h 45min, approximately, before the final leg to Ho Chi Minh City. Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific combine to provide regular daily service between both cities for your convenience.
Ho Chi Minh City Bus operates lines 109 and 152, plus shuttle bus 49 transports you from the international terminal to Ben Thanh Market in the downtown area. Travel times by bus vary, so allocate 30-45min for the trip each way. There’s a taxi rank outside the same terminal, which should get you there in approximately 15min. Uber and Lyft are not available at this airport, but Grab is a local rideshare service you can use, if you prefer. The airport’s car hire centre is located just outside the exit doors of the arrivals hall, International Terminal, for passengers who are comfortable with driving around Ho Chi Minh City.
Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon as it is still commonly regarded, is a potent blend of Vietnamese, French and American cultures, setting it apart from most Southeast Asian destinations. Along its western-styled boulevards and streets, colonial French architecture can be viewed most notably with Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral and Municipal Theatre, two of its most well-known structures. Taking pride of place in the centre is the massive Reunification Palace, which stands as an impressively visible Vietnamese landmark in the city. At Ho Chi Minh City Museum and Museum of Vietnamese History, you can receive a walking tour of the country’s past, which is both highly educational and informative. You’ll find plenty of restaurants here too, but locals tend to prefer establishments like Nhu Lan Saigon and Nguyen Thi Tanh for lunch and takeaways. Tet Nguyen Dan and Mid-Autumn Festival are national celebrations of colour and spectacle.
New Zealand citizens require a valid passport and visa to enter Vietnam. Visas are issued on arrival but must first be approved online. Passports must be valid for at least six months past your arrival date and have a minimum of two blank pages for the visa stamp, and two passport-sized photos are also required. These along with your visa approval letter must be presented at Tan Son Nhat International to receive their visa, which is good for 30 days. Normal online processing time for tourist visas is 3-5 business days, with service fees of roughly $ 18 (NZ$ 25) and stamping fee of about $ 25 (NZ$ 35). Expedited service is available for an extra fee, if needed.
