You can only get flights to New Plymouth, New Zealand, from two locations: Christchurch Airport (CHC) and Dunedin Airport (DUD), both with significant travel times. The best New Plymouth flight deals from Christchurch Airport requires a minimum of two stopovers with connections at Wellington Airport (WLG) and Auckland International Airport (AKL). These stopovers involve extensive layover times of at least 18h before continuing to New Plymouth. Departures from Dunedin Airport require three stopovers at Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington, each more than 17h in duration.
There are no public transport options from New Plymouth Airport (NPL), New Plymouth, to the city centre, so you’ll have to rely on private sources to get there. It’s a journey of approximately 15min for airport taxi service to downtown, and Uber makes trips to the city centre if you prefer. Reservations should be made with Scott’s Airport Shuttle in advance of your arrival. You can also just stop by the car hire centre for a last-minute vehicle after picking up your baggage.
New Plymouth is the only city on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The city is dwarfed in size by the massive Egmont National Park to the immediate south where Mount Egmont sits majestically in the centre. What the city lacks in public transport it makes up for with major roadways: the 44 and 45 run parallel from east to west while the 3 and 3A funnel traffic north to south, which makes discovering the city by vehicle is pretty easy. In the downtown area, Pukekura Park is a main attraction where the flora and fauna of its botanical gardens welcome all to enjoy the splendour. The park is also a major focal point for sports with TSB Stadium and Pukekura Raceway in addition to a first-class cricket ground contained within its limits. The city’s coastline is dominated by the 13 km Coastal Walkway where you’ll find a few beaches, such as Fitzroy Beach and Ngamotu Beach, and the Wind Wand Monument, a huge kinetic structure that is arguably New Plymouth’s most iconic feature. At the northern end of the walkway sits Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, an engineering and conceptual marvel that is a huge favourite among the local pedestrians and cyclists. Govett Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre is New Plymouth’s main art museum and nearby Puke Ariki is another with an integrated library. Monica’s Eatery is a diner near the art gallery that stays open late, perhaps in anticipation of passengers on evening flights to New Plymouth. For some other options, Meat & Liquor serves up some of the best steaks in town while Social Kitchen focuses on Latin American cuisine.
There are no visa or passport requirements needed for flights to New Plymouth.
