You can fly to Hamburg, Germany, from New Zealand in about 29h on the shorter flights or up to around 45h on the longer ones. A quicker way to get there is to fly from Auckland, or you can also fly from the North Island, out of Wellington. If you’re on the South Island, you can leave from Christchurch. The latter two cities offer the longer flights, so if you want to shave a significant amount of travel time from your trip, your best bet is to leave from Auckland.
Unfortunately, there aren’t any direct flights between New Zealand and Hamburg – even the quicker flights make at least two layovers on the way. Almost all of the flights out of Auckland Airport (AKL) fly directly to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) first and then on to either Copenhagen Airport (CPH), Frankfurt am Main Airport (FRA) or Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport (MUC), before finally landing at Hamburg Airport (HAM), Hamburg. Another shorter flight option is to fly via Los Angeles Airport (LAX) and Frankfurt. You’ll also be able to find some of these shorter flights that go via Hong Kong Airport (HKG) and then Zurich Airport (ZRH). From Christchurch Airport (CHC), most of the flights go via Singapore and then Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). If you want to leave from Wellington Airport (WLG), you can find Hamburg flight deals that make three stops, mostly flying first to Auckland, then Dubai Airport (DXB) and Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG).
Hamburg Airport is about 9 km from the centre of the city, and there are a number of options you can use to get there. The S1 train is quite a popular method, generally taking just under 30min. You can also catch a Line 606 bus, which will usually get you there in a little over 40min, or the Line 292 bus, which leaves the airport every 10min or so and makes a stop at Hamburg U Lattenkamp along the way; this only adds a few minutes to the total travel time.
Hamburg is a port city, and the old Warehouse District of Speicherstadt alongside the port is a UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to the pivotal role it played in nascent international commerce in the 1800s. You can also visit one of the largest model railways in the world, Miniatur Wunderland, with 15 km of track and more than 1,000 trains. It also has over 100,000 other moving miniature vehicles and around 400,000 human models. It’s lit by over half a million tiny lights. The modern jewel of Hamburg architecture is Elbphilharmonie. It’s one of the largest concert halls in Europe, with some of the best acoustics in the world. On the historical side, Hamburg’s famous church, St. Michael’s Church, is a fine example of Baroque architecture.
New Zealanders can visit Hamburg without a visa for up to 90 days at a time. The only requirement is that your passport will be valid for three months after your planned date of departure from Germany.
Most people fly into Hamburg (HAM) if they book a flight to Hamburg. Hamburg is conveniently located just 9.1 km from Hamburg’s city centre.
