You can get flights to O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) from Auckland International Airport (AKL) lasting between 30h 15min and 34h, although some can last in excess of 50h. Christchurch Airport (CHC) also offers service to Johannesburg with flight times between 34h – 38h 15min while airlines leaving Wellington Airport (WLG) provide trips of approximately 40h in duration.
Unfortunately, non-stop flights from New Zealand to Johannesburg are not currently available. Although there is one-stop service from Auckland via Dubai lasting about 34h, the shortest Johannesburg flight deals from this location require connections at Brisbane and Doha with total flight times of 30h 15min. Departures with multiple connections are also available from Christchurch with stops in Auckland, Kuala Lumpur and Dubai, while some trips also layover at Auckland, Brisbane and Doha. Airlines from Wellington employ these same three airports en route to South Africa.
Gautrain provides rail service via the East-West Tambo Line from O.R. Tambo International to Marlboro Station for connections via the North-South Line to Johannesburg Park Station in the city centre. Trains depart the airport every 10min with travel times approaching 30min to the central terminal. Airport shuttles companies, such as Shuttle King, airport car hires and airport taxis can complete the journey in approximately 25min. Ride-share providers such as Lyft and Uber can also transport you to city locations from O.R. Tambo International.
South Africa’s largest city and its commercial centre lies a few miles south of the capital, Pretoria, and both are connected by a network of major highways, facilitating easy, convenient travel. Johannesburg, or Jo’burg as it’s more familiarly known, is also widely regarded as the cultural and spiritual heart of the country. The townships of Soweto, the focal point of the anti-apartheid movement, have been incorporated into the city and there are several important museums where you can explore the origins of this momentous chapter in the nation’s history. Foremost among these are the Apartheid Museum, Hector Pietersen Museum and Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, which includes a prison where Nelson Mandela spent time while awaiting trial. The Johannesburg Botanical Garden is a fabulous pick for a spot of lunch and some relaxation after hours of walking. A few miles northwest of the city, the Sterkfontein Caves are a kaleidoscope of natural splendour away from the teeming metropolis. This World Heritage Site is a favourite tourist destination and an example of the vast reserves of mineral deposits to be found in South Africa. A short drive north, the Cradle of Humankind covers nearly 180 square miles of sprawling limestone caves where some of the earliest human fossils were discovered. Cricket lovers already recognise Jo’burg as a huge sports market but there are also several professional football, basketball and rugby teams here to entertain the enthusiastic masses. The Soweto International Jazz Festival in mid-June and Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival in late-June are two massively popular summer events to keep in mind when planning your travel schedule to Johannesburg.
Provided you hold a valid passport, there are currently no visa requirements for New Zealand citizens to fly to Johannesburg, South Africa. However, plans are imminent for a South African e-Visa that will allow travel for up to 90 days. Complete details, including processing fees and times, are yet to be determined.
