Flights from New Zealand generally use two airports in Incheon, with the vast majority of service destined to Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN), while Gimpo International Airport (GMP) is used mostly as a transfer point enroute to the city. Flights from Wellington Airport (WLG) usually last 32h to 34h 20min, and those from Christchurch Airport (CHC) generally take 31h 45min to 33h 25min to arrive at Incheon. Auckland International Airport (AKL) has some of the shorter flights, with travel times often between 18h and 26h 35min.
Unfortunately, direct flights from New Zealand to Incheon are not currently available. Auckland offers one-stop service with a layover at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), which lasts around 18h 20min total. There are also connections via Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), which require a roughly 33h 45min flight time. Christchurch has some of the more convenient Incheon flight deals involving two-stop service, with flights lasting approximately 31h 35min via Auckland and Singapore. Departures from Wellington also use this route but they take a bit longer (about 32h).
For public transport options from Seoul Incheon to the city centre, you have the choice of rail, metro and bus services. Airport Railroad Express (AREX) trains depart International Terminal 1 every 15min or so to Geoman Station, where Seoul Metro Incheon 2 connects you to Incheon City Hall Station. Total journey time is approximately 50min. Bus 306A also leaves the international terminal, with connections at Juan National Industrial Complex Station, via Incheon 2 to City Hall station, with comparable travel times to the metro. A ride via taxi, car hire or call-van (airport shuttles) is about 30min; it may take a bit longer with hotel shuttles, but rideshare services are permitted to drop-off only.
One can argue that Incheon is the industrial and commercial nerve centre of South Korea, and due to public and private investment, the city has blossomed into an important tourist destination in Northeast Asia. Seoul Incheon International Airport is located on nearby Yeongjong Island, and a car ride across Route 110 (Incheondaegyo Expressway) offers spectacular views of the city as you approach from west to east, heading downtown. At its heart, Jungang Park cuts a vertical swath from Munhak Sports Complex in the south, with metro stations at Incheon Bus Terminal, the arts centre and Incheon City Hall as you travel north. Most of the city’s activity is concentrated near its busy port, but before you head there, stops at Incheon City Metropolitan Museum and Incheon Landing Operation Memorial Hall are highly recommended. Wolmido district near the port is dominated by Wolmi Park, where you’ll find attractive Korean gardens, a theme park and Wolmi Observatory. If the panoramic views of Yeongjong Island are insufficient, ferries operate service to many of the nearby islands. Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival in August attracts thousands each year, or you can plan your visit in October to catch Incheon Soraepogu Festival with its variety of programs and events.
New Zealanders holding current passports can visit Incheon, South Korea, visa free for a period up to 90 days.
Booking a flight to Incheon Intl (ICN) is your only option if you intend on flying to Incheon. It is only a 22.4 km journey from Incheon Intl to Incheon’s city centre.
