Peak season:

The busiest time of year is the dry season. This runs from May to September and you’re practically guaranteed sunshine and hot weather. It can get rather humid though so make sure to stay hydrated and take appropriate clothing. However it’ll also make finding cheap flights to Indonesia very difficult to come by so make sure you’ve secured your flight tickets as early in advance as you can. There are also several Muslim events and celebrations scattered across the year, although some draw huge crowds and can make your stay a little less enjoyable depending on what you have planned.

September through to January is classed as the wet season. This can make travelling to the city quite difficult although different parts of Indonesia do continue to experience warm, dry weather for much of this time. Ramadan, which usually starts around early June, should be avoided if you aren’t taking part in the fast as many activities, restaurants and cafes do tend to close early or are shut for most of the day. You will find the cheapest flights to Indonesia are easier to find during the wet season although this can vary depending on your ultimate location.

How to get from the airport to the city centre?

Jakarta:

The airport is around 20km north of the city centre and you have two major options to help you get there. The cheapest and more commonly used choice is to get a bus. The DAMRI shuttle bus goes all over Jakarta for around IDR 20 000 as well as neighboring cities too. Other than that your only alternative is to jump in a taxi. You can find them outside of arrivals but they are a lot more expensive than the bus service.

Bali:

The cheapest way to make up the 13km distance between the airport and the city centre is to jump on a bus. They take about an hour and cost around £0.70. The buses go to Tegal Station in the centre of Denpasar where you can then either get other buses to other parts of Bali or find your way to your hotel. If you walk out of the airport – turn right as you leave the Terminal – then you can try and negotiate a price with a green Bemo. They are mini-bus taxis that can be convenient if you have a lot of baggage with you.
