It will pay to look for flights to New Delhi from Auckland on the budget airlines that service the route, such as Go Air, as these provide the least extras and focus solely on economy travel. This approach is also more eco-friendly, as these airlines try to operate as few flights as possible, fitting in as many passengers as they can. The result is reduced use of fossil fuels and fewer emissions. Another good choice of airline is Emirates, which has a comprehensive sustainability programme, part of which is operating a very young fleet of wide-body aircraft that produce lower engine emissions and can comfortably carry more passengers. It also uses dry-washing techniques to clean internal engine components, saving thousands of litres of water.
Because all the flights on this route are long-haul flights, the single most important thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint and contribute towards more sustainable travel is to choose one with the least number of stopovers en route. Fuel consumption is enormously increased when aircraft engines are at full take-off thrust, so each stop creates a significant additional environmental impact. The other things you can do include not using any plastic products, particularly the small water bottles you’ll typically find on flights. You can help the planet and save money by flying economy class, as this is overall the most efficient way to fly. Also look for flights that use the latest aircraft models, as these are more fuel- and carbon-efficient, and thus more eco-friendly.
