Unfortunately, there are no direct flights to Colombo from anywhere in New Zealand but there are still some great Colombo flight deals that can be had. There is bus service available aboard Sri Lanka Transport Board buses that make the trip in about 45min for a fare of around 200 LKR (1.50 NZD) or you can also take a train via Sri Lanka Railways that will make the trip in about 2h 45min for a cost of around 200 LKR (1.50 NZD). If you prefer to take a taxi, the trip will take about 32min and you should expect a fare of about 3990 LKR (29 NZD). Finally, you can take a Jayride town car that makes the journey in about 26min for an approximate cost of 3591 LKR (26 NZD).
A beautiful place where you can spend an afternoon is Galle Face Green, which is a waterfront green space that has a number of food stalls to sample. Viharamahadevi Park is a fantastic and relaxing place to visit if you want to take part in some easy-going outdoor activities at a lovely park. To see an amazing piece of architecture in the area, make the trip to Independence Square, which also contains a statue-topped fountain. A really beautiful waterfront spot to visit in this area is Beira Lake, which also contains a scenic island and a temple.
For any citizens of New Zealand who plan on visiting Sri Lanka, you will need a valid passport to enter the country. The passport in question needs to be valid for at least 180 days past your planned date of departure from Sri Lanka. You will also need a visa to travel here and you can get an e-visa from Sri Lanka’s government website for a cost of around 10973 LKR (80 NZD) in about 5 days.
