You can fly to Almaty, Kazakhstan, from New Zealand via Auckland International Airport (AKL), with a journey time ranging from 33h up to 53h 40min. Other flight routes are available that take around 40h 35min and 45h 35min. This is the only airport available from New Zealand which provides Almaty flight deals and routes to Kazakhstan.
Unfortunately, direct flights from New Zealand are not available for flight routes to Almaty International Airport (ALA), Almaty. However, there are several options from Auckland International Airport with one, two and three layover routes. You can choose one of the quickest routes, with one layover at Dubai Airport (DXB), usually for 9h 30min, and a total journey time of roughly 33h. Alternatively, there are routes with two layovers, in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) for roughly 1h 35min and in Dubai Airport for about 17h, with a total journey time of around 40h 35min. There is also a two-layover option, at Singapore Changi (SIN) and Incheon International Airport (ICN) for about 11h and 10h 25min respectively, with a total journey duration of 45h 35min. If you choose a route with three layovers, you will benefit from overnight flights on two legs of the journey and a total journey time of roughly 41h 15min.
Almaty Airport is around 14.5 km from the city centre of Almaty. A taxi is a good option to take, as they are very economical, working out at just around ₸ 3.000 (NZ$ 10) for a roughly 15min journey. Alternatively, you could use public transport, as there is a regular bus service that departs every 10min or so and generally takes just under an hour to reach the city centre, at an approximate fare of ₸ 150 (NZ$ 0.50). Make sure to look out for the line 92 bus.
The city of Almaty is situated amongst an impressive mountain range, and Big Almaty Lake is worth a visit, with its backdrop of snow-clad mountains. You can also take a cable car to the top of Kok-Tobe Hill for great views. The area is also popular for winter sports activities, and you can reach the ski resort in just a few minutes from Almaty city, which offers excellent skiing conditions and a skating rink. If you prefer cultural attractions, make sure to visit the impressive Russian Orthodox Ascension Cathedral, in Panfilov Park, and Almaty Metro, which is a work of art. The colourful Zeleny Bazar and Museum of Folk Music Instruments are also worth a visit, to experience the rich local culture and traditions of the region.

An electronic travel authorisation can be applied for online for stays up to 30 days for tourism purposes and should be applied for at least five days in advance of travel.
