Because there are two large airports in Chicago, United States, there are actually quite a few choices to make the trip from cities in New Zealand. The trip times will vary based on your departure point and your layover cities. One flight from Auckland International (AKL) to Chicago O' Hare International Airport (ORD), Chicago, offers a travel time of around 22h. A flight from Christchurch (CHC) to Chicago Midway (MDW), Chicago, will have a flight time of around 43h. When flying from Wellington (WLG) to Chicago O' Hare International Airport, your trip time will be about 24h 40min.
It is unfortunate that there are no direct flights between cities in New Zealand and the large metropolitan area of Chicago but even so, there are still plenty of great Chicago flight deals to be had. There is a two-stop flight that departs from Auckland International and has layovers at Papeete Faaa (PPT) and Los Angeles (LAX) and there is a three-stop flight from Christchurch that has the same layovers but also adds Auckland as a stop. From Wellington, you can also travel aboard this same three-stop flight and all of these flights arrive at Chicago O' Hare International Airport in Chicago.
No matter which airport in Chicago you arrive at on flights from New Zealand, there will be plenty of transportation options to get you to the centre of Chicago. From Chicago O' Hare International Airport, you can ride the Blue Line Subway that makes the trip in about 45min for a fare of around $ 3.50 (NZ$ 5). You can also take a bus provided by Vangalder Bus that makes the trip in about 40min for a fare of about $ 17 (NZ$ 24). From Chicago Midway Airport, you can take the Orange Line Subway that makes the trip in about 23min for a fare of about $ 3.50 (NZ$ 5) or you can hop aboard the Line 62 bus that will get you to downtown in about 55min for a price of around $ 7 (NZ$ 10).
This very large city in the United States offers plenty of things to see and do for visitors from New Zealand. Navy Pier is a very popular destination because it offers all sorts of rides, shopping, and food choices. The iconic Ferris wheel you will find here is not only a lot of fun but offers great views of the downtown area from the top. At the Lincoln Park Zoo, the entire family will have a great time because of all the animal species that you will find here in addition to an interactive farm that the kids will love. Another great stop for animal lovers is the Shedd Aquarium, which features aquatic animal species from around the world.
New Zealand citizens are exempt from holding a visa when travelling to the U.S. Before you travel you will need to get a travel authorization and you can get one of these through the U.S. government’s electronic system for travel authorization. The fee for this authorization is about $ 15 (NZ$ 22). Beyond that, you will also need a valid passport to enter the United States.
