You can fly from New Zealand to Gatwick, UK, from any of the major cities’ airports. If you want to fly from the North Island, you can either depart from Auckland or Wellington. There are a variety of routes you can take from Auckland, with the shorter flights lasting about 22h 30min and the longer ones taking anything in the range of 33-53h. Flying from Wellington, the quicker routes have a travel time of about 23h 30min, and the longer flights take roughly 28h. You can also fly from the South Island, leaving from Christchurch; these all take about 25h.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to find any direct flights from New Zealand to Gatwick. There are one-stop flights, which will usually be some of the quickest, and plenty of two-stop flights. These can sometimes take similar travel times, depending on the length of the layovers in between. From Auckland Airport (AKL), you can fly east or west to get to Gatwick Airport (LGW), Gatwick. You can choose a route that stops at Vancouver Airport (YVR) or go the other way via Dubai Airport (DXB), Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) or Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE). A very common two-stop route from Auckland flies to Dubai and then to Dublin Airport (DUB), before landing at Gatwick. Wellington Airport (WLG) offers plenty of two-stop flights, most of which make their first stop in Australia, at Melbourne (MEL), Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) or Brisbane Airport (BNE). A few also stop at Auckland first. From these airports, they predominantly travel via Dubai, Doha, Vancouver and Taipei, as well as Islamabad International Airport (ISB). Christchurch Airport (CHC) offers most of its flights via Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) or Hong Kong Airport (HKG), and then on to cities like Helsinki, Manchester, Paris and Amsterdam, among others, as their second stops.
Gatwick is essentially an airport area only, near the town of Crawley, just outside London. This is a distance of about 6 miles (10 km) away. You can take a taxi, which will get you there in about 7min, but it’s even faster to catch a Thameslink train into the town. This will only take roughly 5min, and they leave the airport every 15min or so.
Grab one of the Gatwick flight deals on offer and explore Crawley for a while before heading into London. The town is known for one of its popular natural attractions, Tilgate Park. It offers walking trails and row boating and has children’s play facilities and craft studios. There’s also Buchan Country Park, which is Green Flag rated and offers lots of birdwatching. Gatwick Aviation Museum has displays from the history of British flight development, while St Nicholas’ Church is another historic attraction, dating back to about 950 CE. For opera, live music, ballet, stand-up comedy and more, The Hawth is the town’s main entertainment complex. Wakehurst is a grand country manor that now also houses a botanical collection and an important world seed bank.
New Zealand and the UK share a visa waiver agreement, which means you don’t need one to visit Gatwick. This visa-less arrangement allows you to visit the UK for a period of up to six months at a time. You’ll need your New Zealand passport, of course, and you may be asked to show your return ticket.
