How do you get from Gatwick Airport to the city centre?

Gatwick is essentially an airport area only, near the town of Crawley, just outside London. This is a distance of about 6 miles (10 km) away. You can take a taxi, which will get you there in about 7min, but it’s even faster to catch a Thameslink train into the town. Do I need a passport or visa to fly to Gatwick?
