Anchorage Airport is just under 6 miles (10 km) from the city centre. A quick and affordable way to reach the centre from the airport is by bus, which generally takes just under 30min. You can take a number 40 bus from the south terminal of the airport every 15min or so, which will take you to the transit centre in downtown Anchorage for around $ 2 (NZ$ 3). A taxi is another option, which will get you there quicker in around 10min; although, it’s a little more expensive, costing around $ 20 (NZ$ 29).
Anchorage and Alaska state are perhaps best known for their dramatic glacial landscapes, icy wilderness and diverse wildlife. Take a trip to Turnagain Arm with a local guide, within easy distance of Anchorage town, to learn about local ecosystems and spot native wild animals in their natural habitats. You can also visit Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center here. You could take a helicopter tour, which includes a glacier landing, or take the Anchorage to Seward Round-Trip on Alaskan Railroad to view the coastal landscape from a classic train. Boat cruises are also popular, and if you are lucky, you may spot whales in the bay.
As Alaska is a territory of the United States, citizens of New Zealand will have the same entry rules to fly to Anchorage as they would to enter any other part of the United States. A visa is not a requirement due to the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which permits entry for tourism purposes for a maximum of 90 days. An electronic travel authorisation (ESTA) is required, however, and this can be obtained online with a full biometric valid passport. The fee is approximately $ 14 (NZ$ 20).
