One of the best ways to see New Zealand, without a doubt, is by campervan. As long as you observe the freedom camping rules, you’ll have the flexibility to travel at your own pace and set down wherever you happen to find yourself. Last year we took a self drive tour of the South Island over a couple of weeks and were wowed every single day by the natural beauty in our own backyard. Here are some of the highlights!
Lake Ellesmere
On our very first night, we camped by this not-so-little beauty just south of Christchurch: Lake Ellesmere.
Moeraki
Heading south, we stopped by the Moeraki boulders – freaky, almost perfectly spherical dark rocks that adorn this beach.
Catlin Coast
We skipped potential penguin-watching in Oamaru in favour of seeking them in the gorgeous Catlins (the Catlin Coast straddles the bottom of the South Island and is home to a ton of sea life).
Queenstown
Nestled among the mountains, Queenstown is a haven for adventure seekers.
Lake Te Anau
Lake Te Anau, enroute to the Milford Sound, is the perfect spot for a quiet picnic.
Milford Sound
A cruise is the best way to see the Milford Sound itself – you might even get to drink from a waterfall, like we did.
Thunder Creek
If you’re not a hardcore hiker but still want to see some of Mt Aspiring national park, then Thunder Creek is the spot for you.
Byron Bay
A fun and free activity: write your name on the rocks at Byron Bay on the West Coast.
Pancake Rocks
Marvel at the raw power of the so-called pancake rocks.
Kaikoura
Finally, lose yourself in the pure landscapes of Kaikoura.
