Flights to Cebu, Philippines from New Zealand range from about 13h-30h. Your precise flight time will depend on your departure city, as well as the number and length of any layovers you incur along the way. If you’re departing from as far north as Auckland, your flight time is likely to be on the shorter end of the spectrum, whereas those flying out of Queenstown or Dunedin are likely to have flights that are closer to the 30 hour mark, thanks to their geographical location, which increases the likelihood of stopovers.
Unfortunately, there are no direct flights to Cebu from any New Zealand airport. To book the shortest flight times possible, consider booking flights with airlines that regularly service Cebu, such as Philippine Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Singapore Airlines, and see which provide flights to Cebu from your nearest airport. Common stopover cities you can expect when booking your flight to Cebu from New Zealand include Auckland, Sydney, Manila, and Hong Kong.
When you fly to Cebu from New Zealand, you’ll alight at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), about 15km west of Cebu city centre. To reach the city centre from the airport, you can take one of two taxis, white or yellow taxis, with airport-only yellow taxis that are more expensive, and white city taxis that are less expensive. A white taxi ride will cost you about 6 NZD, while a yellow taxi ride will cost you about 8-9 NZD. Alternatively, you can use Grab, the Southeast Asian version of Uber, though you need to download the app and it will cost about the same as a ride in a white taxi. You can also opt to take a local bus, MyBus, from the airport to SM City Cebu Mall in centre city, which will take about 30-45 minutes. Buses run about every 20 minutes, and your journey will cost about 1.25 NZD.
Cebu Island is home to the Philippine’s oldest city and has plenty to do and see for the delight of tourists. Visiting Temple of Leah and the Taoist Temple is a sight to behold, the colourful, Greek-inspired shrine that is considered Cebu’s very own Taj Mahal. Mentioned earlier in the “how to get to city centre” bit, SM City Cebu Mall is the largest shopping mall in the Philippines. But it’s more than a place to shop-til-you-drop, the mall boasts masterful architecture and a gorgeous rooftop park. Stroll through Mactan Shrine Park for beautiful scenery and the bronze statue of Lapu-Lapu considered a major hero in Filipino history.
New Zealand nationals travelling to Cebu, Philippines do need a valid passport to embark on their journey, however, a visa is not required for stays under 30 days.
