What is good to know if travelling to Dubai?

  • You can spend endless hours in Dubai’s colourful, bustling souks. At the Bur Dubai souk, you’ll find textile, clothing and antique stores housed in arabesque arcades and wind-towers. Even if you aren’t in the market for gold, it is worth venturing through the timber latticed arcades and arches of the Deira Gold Souk, a treasure-trove of exquisite, ornate Indian and Arabian jewellery and one of the biggest gold markets in the world. Nearby is the wonderful historic Deira Spice Souk, where you and pick up some exotic incense and spices.
  • Dubai’s latest over-the-top hotel, the Atlantis-themed water paradise, Atlantis The Palm, has a showpiece three-story aquarium (some suites have underwater views of the aquarium).
  • Designed like a traditional Arabian marketplace, Souk Madinat Jumeirah is well worth a visit. You can take a ride along its waterways, admire the stunning hotels, explore the countless shops and stop at a cafe for mint tea.
  • It’s a short drive to the desert, where you can go on desert safaris or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try dune bashing. Just strap yourself into the jeep, take a deep breath and head over the sand dunes.
  • If you’re shopped out, get out of the malls and spend a peaceful afternoon in XVA, a restored old courtyard residence that’s been converted into a contemporary art gallery, cafe and boutique hotel.
  • How long is the flight to Dubai?

When flying out of Auckland to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, you can reach your destination in as quickly as 19h 20min, and there are many options for flights that last 26h or less. Trips from Christchurch and Wellington take a bit longer, with the fastest flights arriving in Dubai in a little over 22h. There are a variety of Dubai flight deals from these cities that are less than 28h, with the most options for flights out of Wellington.

  • Are there nonstop flights to Dubai?

Nonstop flights to Dubai International Airport (DXB), Dubai, are scheduled daily from Auckland Airport (AUK), but you’ll have many more options for flights if you are willing to stop once or even twice on your way to Dubai. Popular layover cities for one-stop flights are Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, Sydney and Hong Kong. Unfortunately, nonstop flights to DXB from Christchurch Airport (CHC) and Wellington Airport (WLG) are not currently available. However, there are a limited number of one-stop flights from these airports. Popular layover cities from Christchurch include Sydney and Auckland for flights with one stop, but most flights stop two or more times along the way. The modern city of Dubai is known for luxury and its lively character where visitors can enjoy a wealth of unique experiences. A great photo opportunity is the Dubai Frame, a 150-meter-tall frame equipped with glass lifts that carry visitors to the top for magnificent views of the city. The observation deck of the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, provides an even higher vantage point. Families can enjoy a day at Global Village, a theme park with rides, shows, and shopping. Swimming, kite surfing or simply relaxing on the sands of Kite Beach along the shores of the Persian Gulf is another great way to spend the day. For a completely different experience, you can watch the camel races in the desert at the Al Marmoom Camel Racetrack, located about 38 km southeast of the city centre. Perhaps one of the most unusual attractions in the city is Ski Dubai, an indoor ski and snow sports venue located in the Mall of the Emirates. If some tax-free shopping is on your itinerary, you have plenty of options, from high-end shops at the Burjuman Centre to traditional markets, or “souks”, scattered throughout the city. Be sure to check out one (or more!) of the specialised souks like the Dubai Spice Souk and the Deira Gold Souk.
